Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a psychotherapy that helps people heal from the effects of overwhelming life experiences or traumas. More often than not, we recover from these disturbing events, but sometimes we don’t. The emotions, sensations and beliefs from the time of the incidents can remain with us, leaving us in a state of constant suffering, like a wound that hasn’t healed.

It is not precisely clear how EMDR works. The prominent theory, adaptive information processing or AIP, suggests that human beings process information stored in memory networks encapsulating events, thoughts, feelings, and body sensations. According to the AIP model, the EMDR protocol is said to access the stored dysfunctional information and stimulate the adaptive processing of this information. The rationale is sometimes given that "human beings have the ability to overcome trauma and to process difficult events – EMDR facilitates this natural process."
